Clinical syndrome caused by release of potentially toxic muscle cell components into circulation
Triggers
- Trauma
- Crush injury
- Burns
- Hypothermia
- Reperfusion
- Drugs
- Congenital
Complications
- Renal failure - ischaemic tubular injury
- DIC
- Compartment syndrome
- Electrolyte imbalances - hyperkalaemia, hypocalcaemia, hyperphosphataemia, hyperuricaemia
- Hypovolaemia
Diagnosis
- Elevated CK (x5 normal)
- Elevated creatinine
- Elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase
- Dark urine + positive urine dipstick
Management
- Adequate hydration
- Diuretics
- Alkalinise urine
- Manage electrolyte disturbances
