Origin  Insertion  Action
Temporalis Floor temporal fossa
Deep surface temporal fascia
Coronoid process
Anterior border of ramus of mandible
Elevates mandible
Masseter Inferior border / medial surface of zygomatic arch Lateral surface of ramus of mandible  Elevates mandible
Protrudes mandible
Lateral pterygoid Lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate

Neck of mandible
Articular disc
Capsule of TMJ

Depress mandible
Protrudes
Side to side movement
Medial pterygoid Medial surface of medial pterygoid plate Medial surface of ramus of mandible  Elevate mandible
Protrudes
Side to side movement

Temporo-Mandibular joint

  • Hinged synovial joint - permits movement in three planes
  • Contains fibrocartilaginous disc and fibrocartilage on the bony surfaces
  • Surrounded by fibrous capsule: attaches to margins of articular area ib temporal bone and around neck of mandible
  • Thick part of articular capsule forms intrinsic lateral ligament (TM ligament)
  • Two extrinsic ligaments connect mandible to cranium (stylomandibular, sphenomandibular)
  • Connects condyle of mandible to articular mandibular ("glenoid") fossa of squamous part of temporal bone
