Papilloma

Pathology

  1. Papilloma
    • overgrowth of all layers of the skin with a central vascular core
    • AKA skin tags or fibroepithelial polyps
  2. Increasingly common with age
  3. Can occur anywhere in the skin esp neck, trunk, face, anus

Approach

  • Examine as for any lump

  1. Inspect
    • Occurs anywhere on skin
    • Pedunculated swelling (may be sessile)
    • Flesh-coloured
  2. Palpation
    • Soft on palpation

Completion

  1. Ask how the lump affects life
  2. Similar lumps elsewhere
  3. Associated conditions
    • Pregnancy
    • Diabetes
    • Intestinal polyposis

Treament

  1. Surgical excision
