Types
- Fibrous - 2 bones joined by fibrous tisue (skull sutures, interosseous membranes)
- Cartilaginous - 2 bones joined by hyaline cartilage
- Primary: joined by hyaline cartilage (costochondrial)
- Secondary: joined by hyaline cartilage and disc in between (all midline symphyses)
- Synovial
- Atypical: articular surface covered with fibrocartilage (TMJ, sternoclavicular)
- Typical: articular surface covered with hyaline cartilage
Types of movement in synovial joints
- Plane: tarsus, carpus
- Hinge: interphalangeal
- Modified hinge: knee
- Condyloid: metacarpophalangeal
- Saddle condyloid: 1st MCP
- Ball and socket: hip, shoulder, SCJ
- Pivot: radio-ulnar
