Cadaveric
Live-donor

Needs HLA matching (as does pancreas)

 

Procedure

  1. Curved muscle-splitting incision in contralateral iliac fossa where donor kidney is implanted
  2. Donor vein anastamosed to external iliac vein (end to side)
  3. Donor artery anastamosed to external iliac artery (end to side) including patch of donor aorta (Carrel patch)
  4. Ureter anastamosed to dome of bladder + JJ stent

Complications

  • 90-95% survival rate for living related donors
  • 85% for cadaveric donor kidneys at 12 months
  • 75% total graft survival rate at 5 years
